Session Description: Many coaches and clients carry unseen forms of labor that are real yet rarely acknowledged in traditional leadership or performance frameworks. For BIPOC coaches and clients, this often includes emotional regulation for group safety, mentoring across difference, navigating micro and macro bias and managing belonging in predominantly white spaces. This experiential session will create space for coaches to reflect on recognition, invisibility and representation in our lives and in coaching. Together we will explore the impact of unseen contributions of minoritized BIPOC coaches and clients as well as what it means to be witnessed in the community. Although some underrepresented BIPOC coaches are well known, while meaningful, many contributions that shape communities, workplaces and the coaching profession remain unseen and unnamed. Together we will explore how the idea of the unsung hero shows up in our lives, our identities and our coaching practice.
Learning Objectives::
Recognize at least 3 forms of unseen labor commonly experienced by BIPOC clients and explain how they may influence client confidence, engagement or decision making.
Apply two culturally responsive coaching techniques that help clients name and validate previously unrecognized contributions.
Create one coaching question that supports a client in integrating recognition of invisible labor into leadership choices, boundaries, or professional narrative.
